GT MK IV Now Fastest American Car Around Track

    • The Ford GT Mk IV set a new Nürburgring lap, becoming the fastest American automaker around the iconic track.
    • The GT recorded a lap time of 6 minutes and 15.977 seconds.
    • The Ford GT MK IV is the third-fastest car to ever lap the iconic track.

Ford just set a new Nürburgring lap record, but not with the Mustang GTD. The automaker did it with the GT Mk IV, recording a time of 6 minutes and 15.977 seconds, becoming the fastest American automaker around the iconic track.

The GT achieved its record-setting time as a track-only vehicle in the Prototype class, the same class the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X ran when it set its record lap of 6 minutes and 49.275 seconds.

The Ford is also now the fastest car powered exclusively by an internal combustion engine and the third-fastest overall. The only two cars quicker than the GT at the Nürburgring are the electric Volkswagen ID.R (6 minutes and 5.335 seconds) and the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo race car (5 minutes and 19.546 seconds).

Ford introduced the GT Mk IV back in 2022 as the most extreme, track-only version of the car. The Mk IV rides on a custom carbon-fiber Multimatic chassis with a longer wheelbase, a long-tail body, and enhanced aerodynamics that can generate more than 2,400 pounds of downforce at 150 miles per hour.

Powering the GT is a bespoke twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter EcoBoost V6 engine producing more than 820 horsepower. The road-going GT has a smaller, 660-hp 3.5-liter unit. Each car costs around $1.7 million. Ford opened the order books for the few remaining GT Mk IVs last August.

Motor1’s Take: The Nürburgring continues to be a benchmark for automakers, and this back-and-forth between Chevrolet and Ford is creating quite the spectacle. After Ford set a record lap with the Mustang GTD, the Chevy ZR1 and ZR1X dethroned the Blue Oval’s ultimate pony car, but it was a loss Ford isn’t willingly giving up.
