Australia’s most recalled vehicles in 2025 revealed

A total of 380,350 cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles were recalled in Australia in 2025, with customers forced to visit the service department to fix myriad mechanical and software faults.

The 136 nationwide product safety recall notices issued last year ran the gamut from the tame (incorrect compliance labels in the Ford Mustang Mach-E) to the concerning (potential toxic gas leaks in Ford’s van lineup).

According to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts, Ford issued the greatest number of recall notices in 2025 (26 in total) and also recalled the highest number of vehicles (110,362).

Across all brands, a total of 25 recalls involved some kind of issue that posed the risk of a vehicle fire, while 16 involved airbags.

While some recalls only affected a handful of vehicles, there were some large-scale recalls. Toyota recalled 69,586 vehicles across seven model lines for an instrument cluster fault, while the next largest recalls were from Ford and both concerned a fault with their reversing cameras.

It’s worth noting that sometimes multiple models can be lumped into a single recall notice, while at other times these may be separated into different recall notices.

The absence of a recall notice doesn’t necessarily mean the absence of an issue. Problems that aren’t safety-related are often subject to ‘service campaigns’. And some companies may choose to be more proactive by issuing a recall sooner rather than later.

Not all recalls necessitate a return to a dealership. Tesla’s two recalls, for example, were resolved via an over-the-air software update.
