Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Last Wolverine #3!
An iconic X-Men hero just sacrificed their own life to save Wolverine. As Marvel’s Age of Revelation crossover event hurtles toward its conclusion, The Last Wolverine tie-in series just ended with a bloodbath. Shockingly, Wolverine himself makes it out of the issue alive, but only at the cost of several characters who died saving him, including Nightcrawler.
The Last Wolverine #3 is written by Saladin Ahmed, with art by Edgar Salazar. The miniseries’ finale finds its heroes, including Logan’s replacement as Wolverine, Leonard, finally freeing the hero from Revelation’s mind control.
Unfortunately, their success takes a tragic toll, as Nightcrawler, Leonard, and the hero Vindicator all give their lives in the effort.

RIP Nightcrawler. RIP the “Last” Wolverine, Leonard. RIP Heather McNeil, the hero known as Vindicator, who The Last Wolverine revealed is also Logan’s wife in the Age of Revelation future. The series culminates in a bloodbath in which all three heroes go out on their own terms, all so that they can free Logan from his brainwashed “Angel of Death” form.
Of the three, Nightcrawler’s death is the most devastating. It is more than that he’s the most well-known hero of the trio. Vindicator and Leonard each make the conscious choice to embrace a “blaze of glory” ending, fighting against insurmountable odds in order to buy the now-liberated Logan more time to escape. That’s not the case for Kurt Wagner.
In The Last Wolverine #3, Nightcrawler reveals that he has developed a heart condition. The strain of too much fighting, too much running, and one final teleportation all add up to a fatal coronary event, in an emotional final scene for the hero. The tragedy is then compounded by the fact that Leonard dies too shortly after.

An Emotional Endpoint For The Future Version Of Kurt Wagner
The conclusion of each of Age of Revelation’s tie-in books, so far, has contributed something to the “endgame” for the crossover. The Last Wolverine #3 kills off Vindicator, Nightcrawler, and Leonard, the Last Wolverine, in service of turning Logan back into a hero once more, after he spent the majority of the event series as an antagonist.
Now, heading into the overall finale of Age of Revelation, Logan is Wolverine once more, and he is back in his comfort zone: on a mission of vengeance. All three deaths in The Last Wolverine #3 are part of his motivation, but the character he has the longest tenured relationship with is Nightcrawler, which is why the mutant hero’s death was crucial.
Logan lost his wife, but readers didn’t see much of their relationship. Leonard’s death hurts, but fans can expect to see more of him when the X-Men timeline resets after Revelation. The same goes for Nightcrawler, but this stands as the latest noteworthy death in X-Men canon for the hero, one that highlights how important he is to Wolverine.
The Last Wolverine #3 is available now from Marvel Comics.
