A new trailer for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End‘s second season just dropped, and it proves once again why this anime produced by Madhouse and based on the manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe is one of the best things to come out of the medium in recent years.
If you’re expecting quick action and explosive magic from this fantasy series following an immortal elf wizard, you may be disappointed. Half of the trailer shows Frieren traveling with her companions, her apprentice Fern and the young warrior Stark, enjoying the sights, the time spent together, and the beautiful things they find in the world. This is exactly the charm of the series, which defied the conventions of the genre to deliver a thoughtful, moving reflection on life, death, and the bonds we forge.
Of course, Frieren doesn’t shy away from action, too. Madhouse proved over the course of the first season that it can deliver some of the best fight sequences you’ll get the privilege to see in anime. The second season will also have plenty of those, as shown in the final part of the trailer. Considering that Frieren‘s first season still sits confidently at the top spot of the Top Anime list on MyAnimeList, high expectations are riding on this second season, but everything we’ve seen until now is reassurance that these high standards will be maintained.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End follows Frieren, an elf mage who, 50 years before the start of the series, defeated the Demon King as a member of the party of Himmel the hero. After going on a trip for a long time, Frieren comes back just in time to see Himmel, now an old man, die peacefully. Driven by regret at not having spent more time with her mortal companions, Frieren embarks on a journey to Aureole, a remote region in the north where the souls of the dead are said to reside.
On the way, Frieren picks up the apprentices of her two other companions, Heiter, who also dies of old age, and the dwarf Eisen. As an elf with an incalculable life span, Frieren treated her early experiences, including her journey with the hero’s party, as ephemeral. It’s only when she realizes how different time flows for mortals that she begins to understand the value of life.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End‘s second season will premiere in January 2026. It will be available on Crunchyroll.
