Battlefield 6 is getting a free trial next week with… a questionable selection of maps, but at least the modes are good

Presumably as a way of marching ever forward towards its (alleged) 100 million player goal for Battlefield 6, EA has announced that the multiplayer shooter will be getting its first free trial later this month.

This is, of course, specifically for players to sample the core, paid component of the game, as the recently launched Redsec remains free-to-play. Redsec, however, offers modes like battle royale and Gauntlet, which aren’t quite the traditional Battlefield experience.

The Battlefield 6 trial arrives next Tuesday, November 25. It will run for one week, ending the following Tuesday, December 2. The trial will be available on all platforms, but won’t include all content from the full game.

Instead, players will have access to three of the game’s maps and five of its modes. Siege of Cairo will be there alongside Season 1’s two new maps: Eastwood, and Blackwell Fields. It’s not the strongest line-up of maps, considering Eastwood is already cut from the larger Fort Lyndon battle royale map that Redsec players should be quite familiar with, but it’s something.

As for modes, you can pick from Conquest, Breakthrough, Sabotage, and Team Deathmatch. Battlefield Studios didn’t say what the fifth mode is going to be, but a dedicated blog post with more information is set to arrive next week.

Beyond the trial’s content itself, the timing is certainly great. Battlefield 6 just received one of its biggest patches, kicking off the second phase of its first season. So far this season, we’ve seen two new maps, several new weapons – but more importantly, solutions to problems the game’s had since launch, as well as fixes to longstanding bugs.

The miserable XP progression Battlefield 6 launched with is far more tolerable. Challenges and Assignments are much easier to understand and actually finish. The often maligned weapon dispersion has been toned down. Some of the wildest vehicle bugs have been fixed. And Portal has a host of experiences that go beyond just bot farms.

In essence, Battlefield 6 feels like its reached its 1.0 status, which makes this a great entry point for new players, even if the trial could’ve used more of the game’s better maps.
