While Project Hail Mary conquers the box office charts, another movie is dominating the discourse. The movie in question is a Bollywood title, but it’s doing better in North America than many domestic releases. This past weekend, it became the top-grossing Indian film in domestic box-office history, overtaking RRR director S.S. Rajamouli‘s Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. We’re talking about Dhurandhar: The Revenge, the controversial four-hour gangster epic that has fueled a massive debate around its politics in India. The movie serves as a sequel to last December’s Dhurandhar, which defied similar controversy to emerge as one of the biggest hits in Indian cinema history.
Both movies follow an Indian spy who climbs through the ranks of the Pakistani underworld to become a crime lord and a key player in local politics. At the same time, he falls in love with a Pakistani woman and influences key real-world events in the last two decades. The film’s geopolitical commentary has ruffled more than a few feathers in India; both Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar: The Revenge have been described as propaganda serving the narrative of India’s ruling right-wing party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Additionally, they’ve been accused of fueling Islamophobia and stoking cross-border conflict in delicate times. This has impacted both the critical reception and the box-office response of the two movies. While reviews have generally been scathing, the box-office performance has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Here’s How Much ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’ Has Grossed
This past weekend, Dhurandhar: The Revenge cleared the $150 million mark at the worldwide box office. Of this total, around $23 million has come from North America. The film is still playing in under 1,000 theaters domestically, but grossed more than The Bride! and Greenland 2: Migration, and has doubled the haul of Jason Statham‘s Shelter. Globally, Dhurandhar: The Revenge has made three times as much as Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson‘s sci-fi mystery film Mercy. The epic action sequel holds a 40% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, which is only marginally higher than the 35% score that the first Dhurandhar seems to have settled at. Combined, the two films — starring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar — have grossed around $300 million worldwide.
