Matt Damon is one of the biggest movie stars in the world, but it’s been almost 30 years since he won his first and only Oscar. Damon and Ben Affleck won the Academy Award for their work writing Good Will Hunting, and Damon was also recognized for his performance in the film. The former Jason Bourne icon even received a pair of nominations in back-to-back years for his work in The Martian and Manchester by the Sea, the latter of which helped Casey Affleck win his first and only Academy Award. Damon is also famous for his work in other classic crime thrillers like The Departed, which hails from director Martin Scorsese, and he once starred in the acclaimed serial killer thriller, The Talented Mr. Ripley, which is currently streaming on Paramount+.
The only other movie to earn Damon an Oscar nomination is Invictus, the 2009 sports drama following Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) and his mission to enlist the national rugby team of South Africa to help reunite his war-torn land by winning the 1995 World Cup. Clint Eastwood directed the film with a script from Anthony Peckham, and it’s based on the novel Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation by John Carlin. In America, Invictus is currently lacking a streaming home, but globally, the film is charting in the VOD top 10 on Apple TV in several countries around the world. The film earned scores of 76% from critics and 75% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $122 million at the box office against a $60 million budget. It’s one of the most expensive films of Clint Eastwood’s lengthy directorial career.
