In just over a year’s time, Anthony Mackie will have the chance to shake off the Captain America: Brave New World negativity as he returns in the hotly-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. Also set to feature a jaw-dropping selection of the best actors of today — including Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, and Sir Ian McKellen — Doomsday promises to be the MCU’s make-or-break point, after years of relative mediocrity.
In the meantime, Mackie fans are helping count down the days until the Doomsday clock strikes by catching up on some of the actor’s filmography, including a strange, bloody twist on the 16th President of the United States. At the time of writing, the 2012 action-horror Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is one of the ten most-streamed movies on HBO Max. Starring Benjamin Walker as a version of the U.S. President who thrives as a destroyer of supernatural creatures, the film proved too strange for most critics and audiences, earning a 34% score from the former and a 50% score from the latter on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. A synopsis for the movie reads:
“While still a boy, Abraham Lincoln loses his mother to a vampire’s bite. He vows revenge, but fails in the attempt, narrowly escaping with his life. He is rescued by Henry (Dominic Cooper), a charismatic vampire hunter who instructs Abe in the fine art of dispatching bloodsuckers. Abe (Benjamin Walker) continues his fight against the undead well into adulthood and his presidency, making a last stand against the ultimate vampire foe (Rufus Sewell) on the eve of the Civil War’s defining battle.”
Another Vampire Flick Is Taking a Bit Out of HBO Max
It isn’t just a former president who is fighting vampires on the HBO Max streaming charts; it’s also a pair of twins, both played by Michael B. Jordan. Whilst also playing in theaters during a brief Halloween re-release, Ryan Coogler‘s incredible Sinners is back in the streaming top ten, ahead of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter in fifth place. One of the biggest box office successes of the year, Sinners is now at the beginning of its credible journey to Oscar gold, with many touting it for triumph in a selection of categories.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is streaming now on HBO Max. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
